American Avocet

American Avocet

We ran across a pair of American Avocets in breeding plumage foraging for food on the mudflats at low tide.

I found their technique interesting as they use their curved bills in a sweeping motion along the surface of the mud rather than the pecking type motion of most other shore birds.
